Avneet Sidhu

Family Survivor

Avneet Sidhu was just seven years old when her mother Sarbjit Kaur Sidhu lost her life when the work van she was travelling in collided with two semi-trucks near Mission on March 7th, 2007. The accident killed three other women travelling in the van, and fourteen additional farmworkers suffered injuries that resulted in permanent disabilities.

Each year since the accident, Avneet has spoken at a candlelight vigil about what she has lost and how we can all collectively make changes to improve workplace health and safety. She and her father have made it their life’s mission to work with the BC Federation of Labour and WorkSafeBC to help ensure that workers are able to come home safe at the end of the day.

“This is not only a day to pay reverence, but to also collectively remember and renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace to prevent further injury, illness, and death.”
